Media Relations

During my time with the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law (2002-2005), I successfully placed news stories in a variety of media outlets, including the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, USA Today, the Associated Press and other major wires and broadcast outlets, including CBS Nightly News and NPR's All Things Considered. I also worked with the Center's Executive Director to write and place opinion pieces in USA Today and the Baltimore Sun and served as a media spokesperson for the Center on children's mental health issues, being quoted in the Detroit Free Press and other news outlets.

Writing

Most of what I write is press- and/or advocacy-related.

Portrait of an angry young man: onstage with OPHIL in 1998 (Photo: Tava Jo Foster)Ah, the halcyon daze of the mid-90s. I was in a band. Our name was OPHIL.

For three and a half years I crammed myself into a van with six to eight other sweaty guys, slept on floors, drank free beer and cranked out budget promo packs and obnoxious e-mail to hype the band. I'll always be happy and proud that for a couple of incredible years I got to hang out with some great people and pretend I was a rock star. If you're interested in seeing what it all looked like check out some old band photos, or view pix from some of our early shows.

The band kept growing musically long after I headed to Washington. Check out OPHIL's last album, Love Songs for Soccer Moms. It's a great album and well worth a listen. The band officially broke up in the Summer of 2005.

The tracks below are all from OPHIL's second CD, "Freako Suave." To hear tracks from OPHIL's distant past, right mouse click over the song title and select "Save target as..." to download an mp3 of the song from ophil.com.
